Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Georgia

Apartment Rental Lease

Two years ago I broke my lease by one month and moved out of the apartment before the lease expired. I gave the rental office and the corporate office almost 60 day notice. The manager responded that she would not give me a waiver to end the lease a month early. I had lived in the apartment for 23 months and purchased a home which I got a great deal on. I could not afford to pay rent and morgage at the same month. The reason I decided to get a house and leave the apt was lack of safety and sanitary reasons at the complex. E.g. upstairs neighbor's toilet leaking into my apartment, several people staying in neighboring apartments but only one person on the lease and these people partying late into the nights, burglarly in an adjacent apartment, difficulty finding parking at night, etc. I verbally reported these to the office but I don't have them in writing. At one pint, I called the Police to break up a party in the neighbors apt upstairs.

I had a 3 yr old and was a single woman. The neighbors upstairs threathened me because I reporting their actions and they didn't like it. Last month I received an email from a collection agency that they will to garnish my wages if I don't pay the last month's rent.

Can I refuse to pay?

Re: Apartment Rental Lease

Read your lease to find your obligations. You admitted you made the choice leave to get a house. That is often a good reason but you have to factor in the costs of terminating the lease. As far as the other issues, everyone who breaks a lease comes up with those reasons and landlords generally ignore them. You made a choice so pay what is owed.if not, expect to pay far more with poor credit.
