Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Georgia
Apartment Safety Issues
There was recently an armed robbery
in the apartment below mine. I am a
female living in a one bedroom alone
and I do not feel safe. I want to get
out of my lease with no
consequences since my landlord is
not providing any safety. I know that
another person in my building was
able to do it, is there a law that I can
use in order to do this as well.

Re: Apartment Safety Issues
Generally, no. Unless the landlord was in on the robbery, they are generally not responsible for criminal conduct of others, and certainly not isolated incidents. In short, it is not a ticket for everyone in the complex to leave. As far as not providing security, you fail to state what the landlord agreed to provide in the lease. There are many complexes that have gates, security doors, or even on-site security. One generally pays extra rent for such security measures. Since you mentioned someone else was able to get out of the lease, the best thing to do is ask.
