Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Georgia

Breaking lease and roommate will not pay

This past Jan. I signed a lease for a year with a girl I was working with at the time. Heres where the problem comes in, April 20th of that same year she came to me at my place of employment and told me that she was moving out and that I had no say. She proceeded to move out 2 days later on the 22 of April. When she moved out she agreed to pay her half of the breaking the lease fee and signed to paper at the leasing office agreeing to it but when it came down to it she said she was not responsible anymore because she does not live there anymore. I lived there for 2 months after she moved out, because we were required to give a 60 day notice. I dont live there either as of June 28 of the same year the lease was broken. Now im in the process of paying of the $1200 that was owed so that it does not ruin my credit. Do you have any suggestions on what I could do? I plan on taking her to court but I have to pay the amount off first. When I do go to court can I also add in loss of pay for having to miss work to go to court? I moved out of state to Florida so in order to come up there for the court date I would have to take a couple of days off of work? any suggestions??

As you mention, you need to pay to protect your credit. If you sue her, you can ask for lost workdays to go to the trial, but you should not count on getting it. Keep in mind when figuring out whether or not it is worth the effort that a judgment is a piece of paper - you still have to collect from her.
