Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Georgia
My girlfriend wants me and all my possessions out of her house after 13 years - 15 years together. What are my rights in Roswell, GA?
We've shared the same bed for 15 years, though I just moved into another bedroom at her request. It's her house, but I've paid monthly rent the entire time. There are no issues of abuse or property damage; in fact, I still love her, but she's found someone else. When do I have to vacate? Do I have any rights? While I'd like to comply with her wishes, it's very inconvenient for me to move at this time, especially with furniture, electronics, books, etc. which would have to be put into storage. There are no written agreements or lease and I'm over 65 if that has any bearing.

I am sure you want the legal answer - she has to give you 60 days notice for a tenant-at-will, then she can file an eviction case. The practical answer is a little different. You need to look for a place now and move. It is not good for either of you to stay there and let the stress build up, and these situations often lead to disputes and calls to the police (yes, by people who have no history of abuse). If your ZIP is correct, you could find an apartment and storage space today, and get movers by the first of the week. Yes, it is a huge burden but it is what you signed up for, whether it was a year ago or 15 years ago. Good luck with it! My neighbors were in your same situation (although only after a year or so). She ended up having to move from her own house while she went through the notice and eviction process because he would not leave. The police were there regularly, although there were no prior incidents. She didn't learn her lesson, as she moved in a clone of him within just a few months.
