I received a collection letter from an apartment complex that I used to live in (in Georgia), where I broke the lease. In 2006 I paid off the termination fees. Is the burden on myself or the leasing office to prove whether or not the fees were paid? Since this was in 2006, I no longer have a copy of the bank statements with the checks listed. They also didn't send out a monthly statement, so I don't have that as proof of my payments.

Since this happened in Georgia, you should try and contact an Attorney there for the best advice.
