Legal Question in Military Law in Georgia

AWOL during Basic Training / AIT

What is the typical punishment for a Private E2 that goes AWOL during basic training? He has turned himself in to local MP within 48 hrs of abandonment. Thank you.

You'll probably be subject to ART 15 and lose a stripe. Maybe they'll also take up to 1/2 of one month's pay for 2 months. But they will no doubt return you to training. If you missed a week or more they may recycle you into another training platoon.

Most likely he will receive a loss of pay, depending on whether they treat it as a company grade or field grade offense. My guess is that it would be a company grade offense, and you're looking at a forfeiture of pay over one to three months. Of course, the range of punishment is pretty broad, and a lot of it will have to do with what your E2 does and says.

Tell him to keep the faith, however. As an E-1 I was AWOL for nearly a week in basic training. I went on to win two Army Commendation Medals. Redemption is possible. I went on to become a reasonably succesful attorney. So there is hope if he holds on and does what is expected of him.
