Legal Question in Personal Injury in Georgia

I was in a one car auto accident recently. I took my eyes off the road to pick up something that fell to the floor and ran off the road and crashed my car. The policeman asked where my drivers license was when I was talking to the paramedics that came on the accident. I told him and gave him permission to go into my wallet and get the information. He told me to drop by the police station in the next few days to pick up my ticket and the accident report. I did get the tickets, actually two, but he has yet to file his report 1 week later. Since I did not sign or even know what I was ticketed for, am I legally bound to pay the tickets and more importantly, let it affect my driving record?

The tickets were for failure to maintain lane and failure to exercise due caution. Should I see a lawyer before going to court? Two questions actually.

Of course you are bound to pay the tickets, or fight them (though it appears the tickets are exactly what you admit to in your post). You might find a stiffer penalty for trying to put up a poor defense.

You either have to pay the tickets or defend them. It might be wise to meet with a lawyer first to determine the best way to address the tickets.

If you received a ticket after an auto accident, you should appear in court.

Under Georgia law, where a defendant cited for a traffic violation fails to appear in court on the day set in the original citation, the failure to appear can be construed as an admission of guilt and a cash bond may be forfeited. If you have not posted a cash bond, a warrant for your arrest can be issued and your license can be suspended.

It is always best to speak with an attorney before going to court.
