Libel
Party A tells you something that party C admitted to that may be an illegal act. Party A tells what Party C told them. You ask questions of others not mentioning names can Party C come back and sue you for libel or slander. If someone you told the information to gets it back to party C.

Without intending to give a smart answer, I must say the real question is not whether Party C can sue for libel, it is whether if suit is brought Party C will be successful. To begin, truth is an absolute defense. You characterized your part in the discussions as making inquiries about the information you had been given. It does not sound as though you made representations about the person which would ultimately support an action for libel and slander. If and when you are served with a lawsuit, you will know that the claim is being made and you should then consult with an attorney. Until then, leave it alone. Good luck.
