Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Georgia

I need to know how to get something back from the police. It was not seized from me, i was not arrested, they had no warrant, and they did not even inform me that they would be keeping it. The item in question is my pocket knife, which holds HEAVY sentimental value as the friend who gave it to me is now dead, having committed suicide whilst on the phone with me. I am attending high school, and wish to know how to get this object back. HELP PLEASE. I am unsure how to go about doing so.
