Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Georgia
I had to break a lease in an apartment due to gang activity
I rented an apartment for five years. The community fell and became drug and gang infested. I gave a notice that I would leave in 30 days, however, two weeks before I left, a gang member approached my child and I left the next day. Now they are saying I broke my lease and owe $1500. I don't think I should have to pay because it was a matter of safety. They also charged me $50. per month for water while other tenants didn't have to pay at all. Now I live in a house and the water is only $13 per month. I need advice on what I can do.

A lease is a contract. You should consult with a local attorney who can review the lease and properly advise you as to under what circumstances you can terminate it. He/she can also adivse you about the excess water bill. You may have to sue them in small claims court. You will have to prove you were the only one paying for water.
