Breaking a lease on an apartment

How can I break a lease at an apartment? I lost my job and can't afford the rent.

You "break it" by not paying rent. You then probably will owe several months rent as damages. Otherwise, your choices are do an early termination if the lease provides, or reach a written agreement with the landlord on what they will take to let you out.
