Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Georgia

Defamation of character

I did not have a lease. I was renting month to month and I would be considered what you might call a ''Tenant at Will''. I was notified by my landlord via a certified letter that they did not want to renew my lease. I have not been in a lease since November of 2000. My question is-(can my landlord not renew my lease without a reason, because I if tried to get another apartment what will they think the reason is for my lease not being renewed that i did something wrong. And what if they defame my character by lying when something may not be true. Can I take legal action.

Thank you

Re: Defamation of character

In the absence of a contract to "renew," Georgia State Law will not help you. There is no "right to renew" a lease in Georgia -- for a good reason, bad reason or no reason. So, if you sue, you have no valid claim of which I am aware. HCW
