Friend Left Personal Belongings

A former friend left some personal belongings, clothes and a small electronic item, in my house. When I asked them if they wanted them back they said I could get rid of them, so I did. That was 5 months ago. Now they want them back. Was I within my rights to dispose of the property?

Of course you were within your rights. He/she abandoned the stuff.
