Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Georgia
Hello! I posed a question, but the answer I got didn't answer the entire question. So I'll post again!
"My Realtor says that the balance on my mortgage is a matter of public record. Other websites say that revealing this information is illegal. Which is true?"
This is the answer I got:
The original amount of loans are generally easy to find and public record, and anyone can run the math from there to see what the balance is (assuming regular payments are made).
So... the question remains is revealing a mortgage balance illegal? Is there any way to obtain an ACCURATE balance, and not just a guesstimated balance?
Thanks for your help!

The answer you got was correct. The mortgage is a public record and there is sufficient data in what is recorded to know your balance at any future point in time. Additionally there is no law that prohibits your balance from being discussed EXCEPT that some banking laws do ban a lender from sharing your information with 3rd parties, so THEY can't divulge it.
