Real Property Transfer

What is the procedure and how much do it cost to have real property name transfer? My Aunt lives in Atlanta,Ga. Her brother died and left her his home in Saginaw,Mi. Attorney's in Ga. want to charge her over $1,200.00 just to put her name on the house. What can she do?

It's not just a matter of doing up a new deed. If that were all there were to it, it might cost you a hundred bucks or so. The problem is that if the brother died with the property titled in his name alone, you must go through whatever probate procedures apply in the state and county of which he was a resident at the time of his death. This could be expensive. At the risk of being a Monday morning quarterback, a little bit of estate planning could have saved most of this expense. Since your aunt lives in Georgia, she is now forewarned not to fall into the same trap.
