Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Georgia

Termination of a lease

My husband and I recently starting renting a house. My parents are co-signers. We both lost our jobs the first two weeks of living here. We both got other jobs making about 1/4 of what we were making before. I just recently had to quit my job because I am 7 months pregnant and have had a very rough pregnancy. We have been living here since September and paying rent on time with the help of our parents. They can no longer help us and we are in EXTREME debt!! And getting deeper! Is there anything that we can do? If it cost a little to get out of this lease, it is better than staying here and getting more in debt. Thank you for advice that you can give us. According to the lease there is no early termination.

Re: Termination of a lease

Well, there is no clear answer to your question. The legal answer is that your parents may end up eating the rent, because they cosigned. However, from defending Landlords (LL) perhaps the best solution (though not a legal one) is to tell the LL the situation and then move out. You are much more likely to get out of the rent if you surrender the Tenacy then to try to nego. an early termination. However, the answer and outcome really depends on the attitute of your particular LL. HCW
