Legal Question in Social Security Law in Georgia
death in family, ss checks.
I'm 17 years old, I turn 18 the 15th of this month. Iv'e gotten ss checks since my dad passed back in April. My mom tends to lie alot. she told me once I turn 18 if I'm not a full time student in school then the checks stop coming. Well I believed that. Then she told me today that she got a letter mailed to her saying since I'm a full time student and since I'm turning 18 the checks will start being mailed in my name. I don't know what the government has me as a full time student in, I'm in ged classes. My mom is telling me not to ever cash one of the ss thats in my name because if the government is confused, I would have to pay back every penny I spent. I'm very confused. I'm trying to get out on my own, I'm 6 months pregnant and I live with my boyfriend. I'm trying to straighten my life out. PLEASE HELP.

Re: death in family, ss checks.
Your mother seems to be giving you good advice. You have to be a full time student to continue receiving Social Security checks beyond your 18th birthday. It doesn't sound like your GED program is full time, but you should check to see if it qualifies. Sometimes you can be in a online high school or college program that meets the full time requirement.
You will have to return any checks to Social Security that are sent in error.
