Legal Question in Social Security Law in Georgia
discrimination on people who do not speak english
My husband a mexican, who was legal, had all the papers and everything, got put in prison for four years, because he didn't speak english. Now he is still in this country, but because the prison authorities took all of his identification, his green card, drivers license, social security card, and even his bank cards he can not prove his legallity. To get a ssn card you need your greencard and licence, and proof of identity. To get a drivrs licence that you already had you need proof, of a social sec. card and green card. Now to get a replacement green card you need all of the above. I have been with this man for 5 years have 4 children, I want to know what I can do... Especially to change his record for what he did not do. he was in prison 8 years ago for something he did not do. How do we fix this?

Re: discrimination on people who do not speak english
Your question is really not a Social Security question but a question of immigration law. You need to ask an immigration lawyer.
You did not say whether your five years with your husband were before or after his conviction and his time in jail. That may be important to his rights. When a legal immigrant with a green card is convicted of a crime, rightly or wrongly, his legal status and his green card are at risk. If he is legally married to you his status is more secure.
I suggest that you consult a lawyer who practices in the area of immigration law how your husband can recover or replace his documents.
Good luck.
