My divorce is final and states that the 2007 tax amount owed ( approx. 15,000 ) will be divided equally. My ex-husband's income is twice that of mine. My understanding is that even if I pay my half but he doesn't pay his, the IRS still holds me responsible. This meaning that any future refund I would be entitled to will be put toward his half of the taxes owed. Is there any way for me to avoid this and protect myself financially? This seems very unfair to the spouse who is trying to do the right thing and pay his/her share.

The way to have avoided this would have bene to have your lawyer address it in the case. You can't change things after the case ends.
