Legal Question in Tax Law in Georgia

Maryland garnishing my wages in GEORGIA??

The State of Maryland maintains that I owe them $1000.00 in back taxes and $28,000.00 in interest and penalties. This from tax year 1984.

They now claim that they are going to GARNISH my wages in my State of Residence for 15 years GEORGIA.

Can they do this???

Re: Maryland garnishing my wages in GEORGIA??

This depends on a number of facts not given:

Did you file a MD tax return for that year?

Why do they claim you owed the $1,000 in the first place?

Do they have a judgment against you in MD or GA?

However, I wouldn't assume they can't. Get answers to the above questions, and challenge the collectibility of a debt 23 years old (most statutes of limitations would have run by now, but some can be renewed).

I highly recommend you seek the assistance of an attorney.
