I received mail from the IRS stating that I owe back taxes from 2009. I was on my parent's tax return up til 2010. This (2011) is my first year filing my own taxes. What do I do to prove I do not owe any taxes for 2009? I must also add that back in 2006 I was robbed and my social security card was stolen along with other vital information. Is it possible that someone has used my information because I haven't had my social security number changed? The letter also lists jobs that are included in the tax return where I have never worked. The only jobs I have worked up til now were temp jobs that I haven't worked long enough to earn up to $20,000, which is why I remained on my parent's tax return. What steps should I take to correct this?

Have a CPA review your taxes and your parents' taxes. No one here can possibly tell you what happened.
