Legal Question in Traffic Law in Georgia
Daughter received a following to close citation in Savannah. She was changing lanes on Abercorn while approaching an intersection with 63rd street, with a green light. A police car pulled into the intersection from 63rd st, against the red light, causing the car in front of my daughter to brake very hard, leaving tire marks. My daughter did the same but was unable to stop completely and rear ended the car in front. A third car in turn rear ended my daughter.
My daughter received a following to close citation, the car which hit her from behind did not. Should we fight this ticket or just pay the fine and move on?

A good driver always leaves enough distance so that they can make an emergency stop so you have described in your post a classic "following too close." Having said that, there are many consequences to paying a ticket, especially depending on her age and driver's history, which you omitted. Additionally, the detailed facts including speed, road conditions, etc. are part of the answer as to the likelihood of a successful defense. Since the outcome of the traffic case may also affect civil suits and insurance claims, she should consult with a lawyer before making any decision.
