Legal Question in Traffic Law in Georgia

License revoked in ga for ticket in al

I am a student and Reservist living in Huntsville, AL but have a Georgia Driver's license. I received a traffic ticket in the state of Alabama which gave me 4 points on my driving record for the state of Georgia. Georgia's traffic law states that a person under the age of 21 must have a revocation of license if that person acquires 4 or more points. Alabama has no such law. Since my license is revoked in Georgia I can't obtain a license in Alabama. What can/should I do? I have to work, attend school and Reserve Drill?

Re: License revoked in ga for ticket in al

It depends. If you have not already plead guilty on the ticket: don't. Fight it. You may be able to switch your driver's license pending the resolution of this case. Another alternative is to see if you can plea the case down to something less. If it is a DUI, that may be hard to do unless they don't have enough evidence in your case or other problems with the case.

Another avenue is to appeal the matter to the Alabama Department of Public Safety. They don't always follow their own rules and will consider an issue such as you've raised and give you a license.

In any event, it's probably going to be expensive to keep your driver's license; lawyer's ain't cheap. I don't think Georgia is permanently revoking your license, especially for a first offense. You should be looking at a 3 month suspension which may mean just deal with it! Bum rides, etc.

When I was real young, I too got too many points and my license was suspended for about 3 months. But I was in the Navy going on a three month deployment. I sent it in the day before I left, and picked it up when I got back!!! Easiest thing in the world; I was at sea the entire time and never needed my license.

In any event, call a lawyer in the Huntsville area; I'm afraid I don't know of any who handle that area. If you need help in the Birmingham area call me at 205-458-1100.
