Legal Question in Traffic Law in Georgia
Payment of fines by check
I got a $15 seatbelt ticket in an adjoining community and sent them a check the following day in payment.
They claim they must have 'certified check'.
Do they have the authority to demand this? It would cost me $5 to get this from a bank to pay them $15. It seems to me that they should be grateful I sent them the $15 and they should just shut up and cash the damn thing.
Do they have the authority to demand certified funds for this $15?

Re: Payment of fines by check
Yes, they can. (Most courts do not accept personal checks.)
Most do accept money orders, which may cost as little as 25 to 50 cents. In person, most also take cash.
