An accident implies you hit something. That means something - be it a tree, a fence, etc was damaged. That is an offense (striking a fixed object). You stay at the scene and call the police. Leaving the scene can get you charged and cost you your drivers license and even land you in jail. Leaving the scene will also complicate your insurance claim.
