Legal Question in Traffic Law in Georgia

I got a ticket for following too close. I was at a stop sign and the guy in front of me started to go then stopped in the middle of the road and I hit him. There was barely damage at all and he didnt even report it to his insurance company, yet the police felt the need to come out and fine me $235.00 which I think is extremely excessive. How can I fight this or lower the outrageous fine amount? I live in GA

If you testify to exactly what you posted in court, you would be convicted without a word from the police. Your post is a classic definition of following too closely.

The police do NOT fine you, so you need to first learn about traffic laws. Only courts set fines. Be aware that in a trial you can be fined up to $1000 plus costs, and jailed for up to one year, so if you unsuccessfully challenge the case, the fine could be higher.

If you do disagree with the case, hire a lawyer. TYour lawyer can advise you, after a review of details, if a challenge is appropriate. He may also be able to help you with dispositions that could possibly help with the fine or whether your ticket gets reported to the state.
