Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Georgia
My mother passed away recently and for many many reasons, (I won't bore you with details) I wish to give up my rights to my inheritance and her estate. Is that possible to do and if so what are the steps I need to take to make that happen?

I'm not sure why you would want to go against your mother's wishes, but there's a form at the probate court you can use to renounce your interest in the estate; or you can call the probate attorney handling the estate to let them know and they would fill it out for you.
I'm not sure why you'd renounce an inheritance, but it can be done by a written filing with the probate court. The details depend on whether there is a will or not and whether an estate has already been probated.
The renunciation must also comply with federal law in order to be effective. It has to be made within 9 months of death and you cannot have received any benefit from the inheritance.
I would urge you to consult with probate counsel before you renounce so that you make sure that the renunciation is done right.
