Legal Question in Family Law in Germany

international divorce

My friend married a German woman about 10 years ago, but then moed back to the US no long after. She never joined him and the two of them have lived separate and apart since that time. He is now ready to pursue getting a divorce, so what steps should he take. Also would it be possible for her to have already divorced him without his knowledge?
