Legal Question in Criminal Law in Hawaii
Good kid in big trouble
A 22 yr old man plead guilty to 2nd degree assault charges and sentenced to 5 yrs probation. While on probation he plead guilty to the following new charges: 3rd degree theft
possession of burglars tools
2nd degree forgery
two counts of unauthorized entry into vehicle
Bail is set for $15000. What type of sentence is he facing? He is basically a good kid, would writing a letter to the judge saying so help his case?
Thank you for your time

Re: Good kid in big trouble
Your definition of "good kid" would differ from that of other folks. This "good kid" has caused a lot of serious harm to others, has blown his chance at avoiding a felony record, and has a significant criminal history for a young man his age.
I would expect his probation to be revoked, for him to be sentenced to the penitentiary for the original term for the assault conviction, and additional terms for the later offenses. He is facing sentencing, potentially, for 5 serious felonies and can expect to do substantial jail time.
A letter to the Judge couldn't hurt, I suppose, but don't be surprised if it doesn't help.
