Legal Question in Family Law in Hawaii
Child Support Obligation while changing careers
My ex-wife and I lived and divorced in Hawaii in 1997. Whe have joint custody of an 8 year old, the ex-wife has physical custody. They moved to California in 1998 following the divorce. I recently accepted a job transfer to California in 2002. As we both reside in California, my child support is handle through wage garnishment and is handled out of the Hawaii agency.
I am currently obligated to payments of $980 per month based upon the Hawaii courts.
In the mean time, I have become very unhappy with my work situation and would like to change employers. I am not sure if the courts will take this into consideration, or will I continue to be obligated to this amount? I do not want to feel stuck with my current employer, yet I am unsure of the consequences of accepting a lower paying position with another company.
Thank you.

The risk you run is that California will calculate a higher amount of child support than what would be calculated in Hawaii given the same situation.
I suggest that you consult with an experienced family law lawyer. Experience is not expensive, it's priceless!
