Legal Question in Personal Injury in Hawaii

Slip and Fell

A friend was visiting Puerto Rico and slipped and fell on the wet floor in the hotel lobby. She suffered multiple fractures to her hip and ankle. Her injuries have also become infected. She has been out of work for 10 months because of this. She is reluctant to sue because this has happened in a foreign country. Is she able to bring a case against the hotel? How would she go about it?

Your friend should contact an attorney who is licensed to practice in Puerto Rico or in front of the federal district court there. You didn't say when this occurred so I would strongly urge your friend to proceed immediately since there are time limitations on these types of cases.

Because your friend slipped and fell in Puerto Rico, any claim that she would have would be governed by Puerto Rico law. I am licensed to practice law only in Hawaii and cannot give advice regarding Puerto Rico law. She should seek the advice of an attorney licensed in Puerto Rico immediately as there may be strict time limitations that apply to the claim. Once that time limitation passes, your friend may be barred from bringing her claim.
