Legal Question in Business Law in Idaho

I worked at a Ross department store for almost 7 years. In March, I was told I would be transfered to another Ross in the same area in 2 weeks. I was the assistant store manager and it was part of my job to clean out unused employee lockers. After I was told of the transfer, I cleaned out the lockers. In doing so, I found a blown glass necklace. I left the necklace in the locker I found it for a week and watched to see if anyone used that locker. After that week, the necklace remained untouched and noone had used that locker, so I took the necklace into the office and asked several employees about it. Noone knew anything about it. The day before I left that store, I asked an employee, and a friend of mine, about it and she told me a girl named Sam makes those, but did not know anything farther. My last day I took the necklace.

A week later my friend (the employee) told me Sam had told her she was upset I had taken the necklace. I told my friend I would give it back. Sam told her it was fine, I could keep it because she was going to make me a necklace like it anyway.

Then my friend and Sam started having problems at work and Sam made up a story to try to get her in trouble. It was investigated and the story was proven false, so nothing happened to my friend. Sam was upset about the outcome and so told my friend she was calling HR about the necklace. I returned the necklace to that store's manager 2 days after the HR threat and told her the situation. Sam did call HR and I was placed on administrative leave on June 11th and then fired on June 18th. Can they legally fire me for this?

Any attorney will say a personal consultation is required to review your facts and circumstances. You can also contact your state's Labor Department and run the situation by them - even start a formal complaint process if they advise. Strange they placed you on administrative leave on June 11th, then a week later they fire you? Consult with an attorney in your area for specifics.
