Legal Question in Family Law in Idaho

Minor child last name change but not adoption.

I have sole legal custody of my 7 year old son. His father pays child support and has visitation rights. My divorce was granted in the State of Idaho but I am now a resident of Montana. I have since remarried and my son is now asking if his last name can change also. His father won't give him up for adoption. So, I am wondering if I can just have a legal name change done and, if I can, if I need to have his father's consent or since I have sole legal custody can I just go ahead with the process on my own? What are my options and how would I start the process?
