Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Idaho

Automobile abandonment

I live in a apartment complex and my neighbor has moved out and abandon their car. What can be done with this car? Can some one take over ownership of the vehicle? It isn't much of a car but I am sure it could be sold for around $1,000. Any info would be great.

Thanks,

Re: Automobile abandonment

Try to get legal notice (service by certified mail) to the owner that if he doesn't claim the car either you'll start charging storage fees that he must pay or that you'll have the car junked and towed away. Do not use it, sell it, etc. since it isn't your car. You can use the abandoned property section of the Idaho Code at section 49-1814, 1815, etc. which requires that you notify the Department of Motor Vehicles and file notice on their forms for them to take control of the vehicle. Contact them and they will advise you of the steps you must take.
