Legal Question in Employment Law in Idaho
Can we be fired for my wife getting pregnant?
My wife and I are employed as house managers and chefs for a couple in their second home. We have been working for them for one and a half years with a verbal agreement to work for two years. We have enjoyed working for them and we know that they wanted us to work for them as long as we wanted. An unplanned pregnancy by us has led to the possibility for termination by our employers. We didn't sign a contract when we were hired and there was never any mention by our employers about us having or not having children. What are our rights? What if they say that you need to leave after our verbal agreement of a two year employment? What if they say after the baby is born you need to find another job? What if they say you need to leave soon? Is a severence payment possible? Thank you.

Re: Can we be fired for my wife getting pregnant?
Your situation underscares the importance of having a written agtreement for protection and predictability in the event of unforeseen developments.
It would be best at this point to negotiate a family leave and severance in the event they want to terminate you. Without a contract you are at-will employees with limited protection and Unemployment compensation as your sole remedy in the event of termination.Their may be state coverage for family leave compensation as well for your wife.
