Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Idaho

can landlord keep my personal property ?

Moved from Idaho to Missouri .Told landlord would be back to get 2 vehicles . Couldn't take them the first trip. When I went back to get vehicles vehicles were gone. Called Landlord he said he put them in storage and I would have to pay for storage. Is this legal ? He knew we were coming back to get the vehicles said he would keep them there. Have contacted him several times will not tell us where vehicles are . What do we do ?

Re: can landlord keep my personal property ?

My first step would be to call this landlord and ask him if he wants me to report him for grand theft auto? If he moved your vehicles without your permission, that's conversion. If he intends to deprive you of them permanently, that's theft. You should probably get the sheriff involved to force him to hand over the vehicles.

Unless he has a written agreement where you have agreed to store the cars with him, then he has no mechanic's lien and no right to withhold your access to the vehicles. A good law enforcement agency should help you reclaim your vehicles.

If the police or sheriff won't help you with this, then your next step should be to see a local ID lawyer and file a replevin action.
