Gifts giving while in a relationship

What is the legal recourse if you have given gifts in a relationship--no written agreement was issued regarding the gifts--they were just given at holidays, etc. Then the relationship goes sour, and one partner is wanting to be paid back for the value of the gifts given?

Generally, a gift is just that, a gift- freely given. There is an exception for gifts given in anticipation of marriage that under certain circumstances may permit recovery-- e.g.-- the ring. I honestly need more detail.
