What happens to a person's estate if they die without having made out a will?

There are numerous possibilities depending on how the asset it titled. For example, if the asset is in joint tenancy with someone then it goes to the surviving joint tenant.
But if neither title nor beneficiary designation takes care of it then it will go to the decedent's "heirs." The term is defined in every state's statute.
