Legal Question in Appeals and Writs in Illinois
felony offenders possessing a gun
If I committed a felony 30 years ago possessing 2 grams of marijuana, did a year in prison for it, and have lived clean for 30 years now, is there any way to get/earn the right to possess a gun for hunting or protection purposes? I am a veteran as well.

It sounds as though you might be a good candidate for a pardon from the governor that would restore your civil rights and your ability to obtain an FOID card allowing you to legally possess a weapon. I direct your attention to two websites discussing the issue:
http://peacesecurity.suite101.com/article.cfm/gun_ownership_by_convicted_felons
and
http://www.shestokas.com/Expungements.html
I would note that the pardon process can take a long time, though Governor Quinn recently announced his intent to clear up a back log left by Governor Blagojevich. I successfully represented someone for a pardon with a history similar to yours and his gun rights were restored as part of the process.
I have a final question for you though, you should look carefully at your criminal record to be certain of your charges as 2 grams of marijuana is not a felony currently and has not been for some time. On the websites there is information on how to get your criminal history. I suggest you check that. Feel free to contact us with further questions.
