Legal Question in Banking Law in Illinois
I just received a payroll check in the mail for about $4,000 from a company hundreds of miles away that I've never heard of. I tried calling the phone number listed on the check, and it had been disconnected. I called the issuing bank, and I was told that the check was valid and that there was enough money in the account to cover the check. Can I get into some kind of trouble if I cash the check?

My guess is that the check is a forgery, and somewhere along the line, someone will want you to return a portion of it due to a processing error or some similar scam. In any event, no good can come from taking money to which you are not entitled.
