Legal Question in Bankruptcy in Illinois

Bankruptcy and Disability benefits

I have recently started to receive disability benefits and also had a back payment...I have though a large number of medical bills at this time...if I were to file for bankruptcy, can my benefits or the back payment be seized? This is a small nest egg at this time and although I could use it to pay a portion of these medical bills, I hate to give up that small bit of security that I have...I am not sure when I will work again and my monthly benefit amount is just enough to survive....but enough that I do not have medical benefits for the future...I am afraid I may need this money to pay for prescriptions, physicians visits, etc.

Thank you
