If someone has filed bankruptcy but is trying to sell their home can that purchase go through?

It depends where you are in the bankruptcy procedure, which chaoter you have filed, and whether you have confirmed your mortgage. If you have filed for Chapter 13 then there should not be a problem. If you are in Chapter 7 then I believe if you have confirmed your mortgage, it is not part of the bankruptcy estate and there should be no problem. If you didn't confirm the mortgage then you will probably not be able to sell it.
