Cease and desist notification

When I resigned from my retail furniture design position to become an independent interior designer, a few clients that I had built strong relationships asked to continue working with me. I accepted and we have been working together for nearly six months now. Today I received a cease and desist letter from my previous retail design corporate employer after a former coworker bumped into me with the clients. While I understand the purpose of the letter, I feel it is inappropriate and do not wish to lose the clients. Am I putting myself legally at risk to continue working for the clients? Does my former employer have the ability to make me turn away these clients?

You should have a lawyer review the cease and desist letter and any agreements you had with your previous employer.

Clearly, this question depends on the employment agreement you signed with the employer, and to a lessor extent, the scope of your employment. I would also have to see the C & D letter.

Are you at risk? Possibly. Can the former employer make you turn away thses clients? Possibly. Was there a written employment agreement? What exactly does the Cease and desist letter say?
