collections lawyer ripped me off

lawyer demanded fees that were 25% on moneys collected by his firm from a dead beat client. his firm did not collect any money from them. i made a deal through another company and recieved the money from them. the dead beat did not pay me. i did not sign exclusive rights with the lawyer. he threaten to sue me for the % on the money i recovered. was he entitled to the money? can i recover my money from the lawyer in court?
