Legal Question in Business Law in Illinois

would this be considered slander

My daughter boards horses for a living in Illinois. Someone had asked a barn owner in Iowa (who does not like my daughter for an unknown reason) if she had ever heard of my daughters facility because she was thinking of moving to Illinois and was looking for a place to board her horse. This barn owner told this person that my daughter was a bitch and that my daughter would run out of money and then not feed the horses and that she would not take her dead dog there. My daughter has a great facility and a lot of boarders. If that barn owner wants to call my daughter a bitch because she don't like her that is her business but when she runs down my daughters business with false and hurtful statements I am wondering if that is slander. I do not want to take her to court but I do want this to stop as she has even emailed my daughters clients before. There is no competition between them as they both live too far from each other. I am not sure what this persons problem is.

Re: would this be considered slander

Assuming there is no truth to the statement and that it was stated as a fact (rather than as an opinion), it is slander (libel if written). It is also likely in a special category called "defamation per se."
