Legal Question in Business Law in Illinois

Dispute Resolution

You plan to open a store in Chicago, specializing in beautiful rugs imported from Turkey. You will work with a native Turk who will purchase and ship the rugs to your store. You are wise enough to insist on a contract establishing the rights and obligations of both parties and would prefer an ADR clause. But, you want to be sensitive to different cultures and do not want a clause that will magnify a problem or alienate the parties. Is there some way you can accomplish all of this?

Re: Dispute Resolution

Be wise enough to consult with a Turkish lawyer to determine what the customs and practices are if different than what we do here, weigh those against the protections that our standard practices provide. If they provide less security or rights to you, you will have to make a business decision on whether you may wish to waive some of the protections that are available to you in order to be culturally sensitive. You may be able to obtain the names of attorneys who work with Americans for importexports by contacting the local consulate.
