Legal Question in Business Law in Illinois

Can I file a DBA as a minor? I'm 17, went in to the County Clerk today and was denied the ability to file for an Assumed Name. I have a tax number and EIN already, so I'm confused why I can't do this.

Because you are apparently defined as a minor because of age, you cannot qualify for a dba, which is governed by state law. An EIN is governed by federal law; minors can be liable for taxes so an EIN or SSN is available and required for minors who pay taxes.

As a Franchise Attorney I only add the following. As a minor you can't legally enter into business contracts, etc., so you can see the problem with getting a business DBA. Consult with a good business or franchise attorney in your area for specific advice.
