Re: non profit organizations
Starting a non-profit organization involves numerous issues of state and federal requirements, tax regulations and decisions on what and why you want to operate one.
To be able to accept donations that are tax deductible to the donors you must receive the permission of the IRS. Otherwise, donations are not tax deductible and you cannot state otherwise.
There are considerations on how you will use the money that is raised. Using money for certain purposes can open you up to having any tax exempt status revoked by the IRS.
The State of Illinois also has certain filing requirements that must be met to start a non-profit organization. These must be complied with "to the letter."
I would urge you to consult with an attorney on a more formal basis. I practice in Lake, Cook and the surrounding counties. You can reach my direct line at (847) 223-4410.
Good Luck
