People Questioning Theft

I use to work for a church. I was the office manager and was in charge of purchasing items for the church. Many times people would come and ask for me to purchase items or even leave notes with items to purchase. I did this and now a year later they are looking into to me stealing all this stuff. I had asked for a Purchase Order Form but was told it was not necessary. They want me to come in even though I don't work there now and answer questions. Some items I may know but some items I don't remember who asked me to purchase. Can they arrest me or sue for reimbursment of these items?

I wouild suggest that you not appear in person. Tell them to send you the questions in writing. Doing so, will allow you more time to recall the answer and result in more accurate responses. Additionally, you can show the questions and answers to an attorney and avoid incrimination.

You are at risk here and need to proceed cautiously.

If your employer has a reasonable belief that you stole the items, they may refer the matter to the states attorney for criminal prosecution or they can bring a civil law suit against you to recover the items. It is then up to them to prove their case, but you have to defend yourself or risk losing (your freedom or your money).

I suggest that you consult a lawyer.
