Are pictures from newspapers that

are published on the internet are they now in the public domain and

can be reprinted on other web sites?

No. Consider that if that were the case, any media or data transmitted to the web would lose copyright protection. Music downloading is a good example of information not being public domain just because someone put it on the internet.

No they are not. The newspapers own the copyright to the images, and most of them do not take copyright violations lightly.

As the other attorney correctly stated, the newspaper owns the copyright to the pictures and they cannot be reproduced without express permission from the newspaper.
